The mixture of dirty sand and water is pushed upward through the sand lifting pipe. Strong friction will push the dirty suspended solids upward. separated from the sand. Released at the top of the riser pipe, the dirty water is discharged.

At the top of the sand lifting pipe, the sand falls through the annular space of the sand washer and is cleaned by filtered water in the opposite direction to the falling direction of the sand. The flow of filtered water is driven by the liquid level difference between filtered clean water and sand washing water.
